What the research says

Continuous support changes how birth goes.

A 2017 Cochrane review pooled 26 trials covering 15,858 women in 17 countries. Women who had someone with them continuously through labour were, on average:

  • 25%less likely to have a caesareanRR 0.75 · 24 trials
  • 31%less likely to feel negative about their birthRR 0.69 · 11 trials
  • 41minshorter labourMD −0.69 h · 13 trials
  • 10%less likely to need an instrumental birthRR 0.90 · 19 trials
  • 10%less likely to need pain medicationRR 0.90 · 15 trials
  • 38%fewer babies with a low five-minute Apgar scoreRR 0.62 · 14 trials

The review found the biggest drop in caesareans when the support person was in a doula role: trained, experienced, and there only for you.

Birth in Australia today

The system has changed. Your support should keep up.

1 in 3
labours in Australia are induced (33% in 2023).
1 in 5
new mothers, and 1 in 10 new fathers, experience perinatal depression or anxiety.

Many of these are the right call. The point is that you'll be asked to make real decisions, often quickly, in a system with its own policies and timelines. It helps to have someone in your corner who knows how it works.

Being informed

Ask better questions. Make your own decisions.

We'll go through your options together before you need them, so nothing in the room is the first time you've heard it. When a decision comes up, there's a simple way to slow it down:

  1. BBenefits. What would this help with?
  2. RRisks. What are the downsides, for me and for baby?
  3. AAlternatives. What else could we try?
  4. IIntuition. What does my gut say?
  5. NNothing. What happens if we wait, or do nothing for now?

You can always ask for a few minutes to talk it over. Informed consent is your right in every Australian hospital and birth centre.

Knowing the system

Public, private, midwifery group practice, birth centre, home. Let's find your way.

  • Compare models of care, including continuity-of-carer options near you
  • Understand your hospital's policies before you arrive
  • Write birth preferences your care team will actually read
  • Prepare questions for each antenatal appointment
  • Plan for every kind of birth, including caesarean and VBAC

A doula doesn't replace your midwife or doctor. I don't give clinical care. I help you understand it, and make sure you're heard.

Supported throughout

From the first appointment to the fourth trimester.

  1. Pregnancy

    Getting ready, together

Antenatal visits at home or online. Comfort techniques for labour: breathing, positions, massage, TENS and rebozo. A birth plan for plan A, B and C. Your partner learns how to help too.

  2. Labour & birth

    Continuous, from start to finish

On call from 37 weeks. I come when you need me and I stay. Hands-on comfort, calm in the room, and space for your questions to be answered before decisions are made.

  3. Fourth trimester

    The weeks after

Postnatal visits, a gentle debrief of your birth story, feeding and sleep support, and a steady check-in on how you're really going, with referrals to lactation and perinatal mental health services when you need them.

Good questions

Things people ask over the first cup.

Will a doula replace my midwife or obstetrician?

No. Your midwife or doctor provides your clinical care. A doula provides emotional, physical and informational support, and works alongside your care team.

When should I get in touch?

Any time. Many families reach out in the second trimester, which leaves time for preparation visits, but it's never too late for a chat.

Is there still a role for my partner?

Yes. I support your partner too. I show them what helps, so they can be present without holding everything on their own.

I'm planning a caesarean. Is a doula still useful?

Yes. Preparation, knowing what to expect, support on the day where hospital policy allows, and help in recovery all matter just as much.

I live remotely. Can you still help?

Yes. Online support works anywhere with a phone signal, and we can talk about travel for in-person support.
